Religion & Politics in the New Europe [PDF]

Catholics for Choice organized the Religion & Politics in the New Europe forum on November 27, 2007 which brought together more than 100 members of the European Parliament, experts, advocates and public policy professionals. Bringing together those on both sides of the debate, many for the first time, the forum was part of a continuing and wide-ranging dialogue about the relationship between our government institutions and organized religious influences. This report helps create a better understanding of what should be the appropriate role for religion in contemporary politics.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights: Neither Religious nor Civil [PDF]

The latest report in the Opposition Notes series examines the work of the Catholic League and its president, Bill Donohue, who has waged a long and lonely campaign to bully into silence anybody he deems to have insulted the Catholic church. According to an annual report put out by the League, the number of examples of anti-Catholicism grew from 140 in 1995 to 320 in 2006, yet the only thing that seems to have actually increased is the League's definition of what constitutes anti-Catholic activity.

Truth & Consequence—A Look behind the Vatican’s Ban on Contraception [PDF]

On the eve of the pope's visit, Catholics for Choice released a publication examining the impact of 40 years of Humanae Vitae, the Vatican document that cemented the ban on contraception. Widely acknowledged as a defining moment in modern church history, Humanae Vitae became a source of great conflict and division in the church.

In Good Conscience: Respecting the Beliefs of Health-Care Providers and the Needs of Patients [PDF]

This pamphlet has been written to give a brief overview of some of the key themes in the debate on refusal/conscience clauses: how conscience clauses evolved; Catholic teachings on conscience; and how the concept of conscience has been manipulated, especially within the context of reproductive health and rights. We hope that it will be useful for those who have an interest in health care ethics, those who may be negotiating conscience clauses in their own institutions and states as well as for those who may be considering their own positions on conscience clauses.

Catholic Attitudes on Condoms in the Prevention of HIV and AIDS [PDF]

As public health campaigns focus on condom use as a key to preventing HIV/ AIDS transmission, the Vatican maintains steadfast opposition to the use of condoms for any reason. In anticipation of World AIDS Day, Catholics for Choice asked Belden Russonello & Stewart to conduct an international poll of Catholics to determine their attitudes toward condoms and AIDS. BRS surveyed Catholics over 18 in Ghana, Ireland, Mexico, the Philippines, and the United States; the results of the poll are reported here.
